In preparation for my upcoming talk on Creativity at the Hood River Library I have been going back through sketches and drawings of what I call 'Paint Jams'. Paint Jams are what happens when I put on good music with no intention of doing anything other than making marks that are reflective of what I am feeling while listening. Perhaps Synesthesia has a bit to do with it.<br />
For me the line is the thing.<br />
Line communicates so very much that music does. There is a thickness and richness to sounds and line- they can have the same qualities in very different ways. Jazz is great for this and so is electronic music. My favorites to Jam to are <a href="https://video.search.yahoo.com/video/play;_ylt=A86.J7yjZhVXh0oAODpjmolQ;_ylu=X3oDMTBsOXB2YTRjBHNlYwNzYwRjb2xvA2dxMQR2dGlkAw--?p=MILES+DAVIS+KIND+OF+BLUE&tnr=21&vid=96229B1F69002EAE402A96229B1F69002EAE402A&l=3324&turl=http%3A%2F%2Fts2.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DOVP.V4316efa3ef592f5ff4c53343c0732631%26pid%3D15.1&sigi=12br367g8&rurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DkbxtYqA6ypM&sigr=11b208hrh&tt=b&tit=Miles+Davis+-+Kind+of+Blue+-+1959+%28Complete+Album%29&sigt=11iv96il5&back=https%3A%2F%2Fsearch.yahoo.com%2Fyhs%2Fsearch%3Fp%3DMILES%2BDAVIS%2BKIND%2BOF%2BBLUE%26vm%3Dp%26type%3Dsearch_1%26param1%3D19256274%26param2%3D364670%26param3%3D51%26param4%3D-1374062683%26hsimp%3Dyhs-prodege_001%26hspart%3Dprodege%26fr%3Dyhs-prodege-prodege_001%26ei%3DUTF-8&sigb=16letau70&hspart=prodege&hsimp=yhs-prodege_001&vm=p" target="_blank">Miles Davis</a>,<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clC6cgoh1sU" target="_blank"> John Coltrane</a>, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EstPgi4eMe4&ebc=ANyPxKpnfYyApITGRIyvvr6lUvBhSHo6mjueqq1QpsBRb8r87D-_EMv2pK1rU61KYlFBQkbiNT-V53HSoJhNJQZuDci1XNZZ8Q" target="_blank">Cecil Taylor</a>, and the more modern <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynnFeTDzz9M" target="_blank">Mount Kimbe</a>,<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTJkOQ0y6ig" target="_blank"> Emanicpator</a>, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEI1_oGPQr0" target="_blank">Tycho</a>, and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUR_C7EO-oU" target="_blank">Gramatik</a>.<br />

My talk will touch on three artist spanning mediums and will focus on the ideas of what nurtures creativity. In particular, play, community, and perseverance. We will round out the conversation by doing a Paint (in this case Drawing) Jam and blind/modified contours.<br />

Happy Tuesday! This week I am working on getting my thoughts together for a presentation I'm doing on Rekindling Creativity at the Hood River Library. <span style="color: purple;"><span style="color: black;">When I embarked on my journey into learning about creativity, I had no idea there was so much work already surrounding it. As an artist and a bit of an introvert I tend to think of myself like an island. What I have learned the most my googling, listening, and reading is that there is a wealth of information and research already out there on creativity. However, rather than focus on the work of neuroscientists, philosophers, and psychologists I'm most keenly interested in what creative people have to say about <i>being creative.</i></span></span> I've been listening to interviews with Miles Davis and some of Joyce Carol Oates lectures. Its fascinating to me how this idea of <i>being</i> creative and <i>generating</i> work has similarities across disciplines.<br />
I now feel much less alone and part of a greater universal community of artists. Stoked to present my thoughts and my research. The opportunity to spark discussion and build a local network of creatives is exhilarating! Since this will be my first presentation since college my biggest goal is to build momentum to drive my research and art making.<br />
<br />
This is a taste of what my week has been like, listen and enjoy!<br />

<br />
I've also developed a strong liking for Dr. Nancy Andersen and her work with <span style="color: purple;"><b><a href="http://www.creativethinkingproject.org/" target="_blank">The Creative Thinking Project.<span style="color: purple;"> </span></a></b></span><br />
Some of what she has to say is over my head, but a good bit is fascinating, particularly her take on Dr. Lewis Termin's 1921 study of IQ and what happens to kids with high IQs as they grow up (IQs between 140-200). His subjects went on to live very 'successful' lives, they were well off, had good jobs, and overall possessed a good quality of life. However, Dr.Termin,when setting up this study, excluded two children which went on to win Nobel Prizes. Their answers to his IQ questions were divergent and their IQ scores were slightly lower than the range in his study (120 +/- 5pts). So, while creative types are not typically in the 'genius' range of IQ scores, creatives are still above average. Geeky food for thought. I wish I had the time to go down that rabbit hole too! <br />

Last week I was lucky enough to have my mom visit from the east coast. I didn't get much done in the studio, but I did get my work hung at the <a href="http://hoodriverlibrary.org/" target="_blank">Hood River Library</a>! Yay! This week I'll be hanging my work at <a href="http://www.thenorthshorecafe.com/#eatwell-livewell" target="_blank">The North Shore Cafe</a> in White Salmon.</div>

We also took a trip into Portland to visit the Saturday Market, I hope to have inventory for art fairs and markets in the future and would <i>really</i> love to be a part of <a href="http://www.portlandsaturdaymarket.com/" target="_blank">Portland Saturday Market</a>. </div>

I was also able to get more work up on Society6, so there's that to be proud of! Whew! I never imagined back in art school that there would be so much <i>work</i> and not <i>art work</i> to being an artist. At least I love every minute of it! More to come next week. I'm bursting at the seams with enthusiasm for a new project! Never one to focus on a small number of projects at once I have started making molds to cast multiples so that I can work through ideas en masse! Below are images of my mold making project. I used a two part brush-able silicone by Smooth-On <a href="http://www.smooth-on.com/" target="_blank">http://www.smooth-on.com/</a> its a great product and easy to use, and picks up incredible detail!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Final silicone molds after 4 layers of Smooth-On.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Despite my experience as an undergraduate at UNC Asheville in the
sculpture program, I had never used brush-able silicone for mold making
before. I was unsure of how it would pick up the detailed texture of my
wood carvings. <br />
<br />
<br />
To support the silicone I had to construct a mother mold. I constructed my mother mold out of plaster.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_ATT88zskh4AlJ9nk9-MHax85mh7hFal1KN4t7tnPj0Ufs9bdIvq-b4kEWhDKr7oP-qGMAlJ472p8l_XvS4cmIPOZn8siNIs8bfBsEKF7T8RA_cn_D-HNuz5U9cT3kpA8wzT1e6_Z3GI/s1600/IMG_4825.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_ATT88zskh4AlJ9nk9-MHax85mh7hFal1KN4t7tnPj0Ufs9bdIvq-b4kEWhDKr7oP-qGMAlJ472p8l_XvS4cmIPOZn8siNIs8bfBsEKF7T8RA_cn_D-HNuz5U9cT3kpA8wzT1e6_Z3GI/s200/IMG_4825.JPG" width="150" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4ViEkSvMNC0TWHv5S5FJ0scBTs7xJrSb72kCsQRiIbqfTJrs1XQsmE2s7btOor9JYzrBo7TT4bjzz0QuSBG2W4f-KhBl8ndfHwopGWgnMXY0Zk0BtIyt3KME4fOqpRdiFtK6jhZwDlU4/s1600/IMG_4908.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4ViEkSvMNC0TWHv5S5FJ0scBTs7xJrSb72kCsQRiIbqfTJrs1XQsmE2s7btOor9JYzrBo7TT4bjzz0QuSBG2W4f-KhBl8ndfHwopGWgnMXY0Zk0BtIyt3KME4fOqpRdiFtK6jhZwDlU4/s200/IMG_4908.JPG" width="150" /></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPB6r3Qpmb2tEGk_IKtmmeVwMz5qbe3K1oMwq4CigYiX5fYsBOT3Q0JiU2EU5ov112vpPiNIP8hTngKH4ZutPxGiRJqe0HZbNkSvN-XaEvrMo816qLFg77wc9siWWwg2F5JSgT3V_Q3tA/s1600/IMG_4826.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPB6r3Qpmb2tEGk_IKtmmeVwMz5qbe3K1oMwq4CigYiX5fYsBOT3Q0JiU2EU5ov112vpPiNIP8hTngKH4ZutPxGiRJqe0HZbNkSvN-XaEvrMo816qLFg77wc9siWWwg2F5JSgT3V_Q3tA/s200/IMG_4826.JPG" width="150" /></a></div>
<br />
Once the mold was complete I made a test casting to see how the Smooth-On picked up the detail, and to be certain that my mother supported the silicone adequately.<br />

As for Etsy, I'm now at 10 items and growing! I've had a great time this week networking with other Etsy Shops and joining Etsy Teams, I'm really excited to be part of a global community of artist and creatives. <br />

<br />
Its been nearly two years since I was on top of my blog game, and it's time I took another stab at it!<br />
So much has happened in the past two years that I'll not try to cover it all. I'll just hit the highlights. :)<br />
<br />
In June 2015 I had shoulder surgery an this set me back a little bit in the studio, but I was able to finish out the year strong by completing several works in early October. <br />

NW by SE has shown for at least 6 months out of every calendar year since starting in 2012. I am hugely proud of this and look forward to my next showing at the Hood River Library in Hood River, Oregon! My work will be up from April 1-28th. I am also thrilled to be doing a presentation about creativity on April 23 from 2-4pm. We'll be taking a look at three artists and their ideas surrounding creativity, Pablo Picasso, Joyce Carol Oates, and Miles Davis. I'm very nervous about the talk since its the first time since college I'll be presenting research. My goal for this event is to gain confidence in my speaking and give myself a starting point for inspiration workshops in the future.<br />

This week I got a head start on making backing material for the Minis! Additionally, the big piece of Mt. Baker with snow covered trees has gone home. I have mixed feelings about sending her on her way but I'm glad my patron is pleased with the work. :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAozJT51Fj8RY7NFFknvfawAEGeU0ImliO3d0-jLkaHxLJnN7fTTKpVqM4nckPdIrBMz78zP0DbIAA1iq_ofeSjc_2HPrZZWQY90qGBMAUbQtlS-oMOgJYOX9w2MZdgbD7hFd1uJtA03E/s1600/DSCF4733.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAozJT51Fj8RY7NFFknvfawAEGeU0ImliO3d0-jLkaHxLJnN7fTTKpVqM4nckPdIrBMz78zP0DbIAA1iq_ofeSjc_2HPrZZWQY90qGBMAUbQtlS-oMOgJYOX9w2MZdgbD7hFd1uJtA03E/s1600/DSCF4733.JPG" height="640" width="273" /></a></div>
<br />
The Mt. Baker piece above is 8 feet tall! I can't wait to start my next big one! I'm thinking that it will be Spirit Falls on the Little White Salmon. I'll have to hike in and do more studies of it. Below is a watercolor I did last spring of the falls a a peak flow. I'm thinking this one may be only 6 feet tall. <br />
<br />

<br />
Also, I made some progress with a few more of the Minis. I finished painting them and now all that's left is to seal and varnish them! I'll have those done by the end of the week. Check 'em out! I'll have the finished ones up on my Facebook page as soon as they're done! <br />

The 'Mini Me' project is coming along quite well! My goal is to have 50 available in time for the Gorge Artist Open Studio Tour this coming April. (<a href="http://www.gorgeartists.org/home">http://www.gorgeartists.org/home</a>) I'm well on my way there too! So far I have 19 Minis Finished and ready for sale with 8 others in the works that should be done soon! Check out what I have so far: </div>

I've also been working steadily on a piece for the Preview Show for GAOS that will be at The Dalles Art Center for the month of March. Its been a bit slow going for the last week and a half. I pinched my sciatic nerve and couldn't walk for a few days and then just as I was getting better Dixie-Mae got sick! We are both doing better now and back hard at work :) I wasn't planning on sharing photos of 'Flight II' before it goes up at The Dalles Art Center but I just can't help myself! Here's a peek:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkToWABKrqizXliJWY2Ym73tx-MeCuWaRh8KOpLTtIbMp0Z1Cj8DWhAqJFHwUMPWRGEih87wlWXT9Bnd6b2uxEPqkpwh5pbOpJmQ6LwCMgZ6-ljtXvZ7fza9VnCuRYw4ENgiMc38y0sC4/s1600/DSCF4703.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkToWABKrqizXliJWY2Ym73tx-MeCuWaRh8KOpLTtIbMp0Z1Cj8DWhAqJFHwUMPWRGEih87wlWXT9Bnd6b2uxEPqkpwh5pbOpJmQ6LwCMgZ6-ljtXvZ7fza9VnCuRYw4ENgiMc38y0sC4/s1600/DSCF4703.JPG" height="240" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
'Flight II' is an evolved version of a piece I did in 2012 that I really enjoyed making, that also started my use of line and geometric shape with raptors. Since then I've began to use a lot more curvilinear lines in my compositions and I was curious to see these subtle differences side by side in essentially the same composition. It feels really good to go back to my roots</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I finished the under painting (shown above) last night and I'm hoping to have all the shapes painting in by the end of the day today. My goal is to have it ready to drop off by Saturday February 22, just a few days from now! Maybe I won't be able to contain the enthusiasm for 'Flight II' and post a preview here... we'll just have to wait and see!</div>

For March I'm working on a submission for the Woodburn Art Center themed 'Tulips and other Bulbs' right now I'm still working on sketches for it. Also, my sister is finally having me make some art for her home! Yay! Sketching that one out too. In the meantime I have to keep my hands busy and so I'm making Minis! These are 5x5" pieces on wood that allow me to experiment with background colors and pairing them with a complementary varnish color. To start off I made some Mini Dog Walkers in black and white. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Above is a shot of my workbench- complete with ear protection and coffee! <br />
<br />
To the left are the Mini Dog Walkers before painting and varnishing. I think that I'll do a few of these mini pieces with plain wood grain and colored varnish too, just to change things up a bit. I'm sanding down some Accidental Paintings later today that are also mini sized. Super excited about those since only folks that have been to my studio have seen them thus far! Treats!<br />
Below are the first minis! Hope you enjoy!<br />

Things are finally calming down around here! The past three months have been super exciting and full of new (and old) projects! November was excellent! I had work up at North Shore Cafe in White Salmon and had a hugely successful raffle and even a few sales! Unfortunately, my camera was broken at that time so I was unable to get any pictures. In early December I was fortunate enough to assist in some small ways with the relocation of Solstice Woodfire Pizza. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Below is the sign for the hostess stand I did for them: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIG0MHRL2ofeWviJFcCw2gTbqtSuTCv6hOlHV1gbynwiFZ7IhZuMGolrBNzPnbDjiVQuQeQEwj7nbMvSIRckxyLX8oeCTPXySN-U6P2ueNSNGUG3iUFBOsqu4uwTamYGCwwuwlAM1dZ8Y/s1600/DSCF4508.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIG0MHRL2ofeWviJFcCw2gTbqtSuTCv6hOlHV1gbynwiFZ7IhZuMGolrBNzPnbDjiVQuQeQEwj7nbMvSIRckxyLX8oeCTPXySN-U6P2ueNSNGUG3iUFBOsqu4uwTamYGCwwuwlAM1dZ8Y/s1600/DSCF4508.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is a shot of how it looked prior to painting in the black area. This was all done with a router and then painted in! No wood burning involved at all. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In addition to making the sign for the hostess stand I was also asked to put some work up in Solstice for their first quarter- so my work will be up there through mid-February! I've really enjoyed getting to know the folks that own and work as Solstice. Its been a great experience all around. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjYIIVIt85N0s-4ZV4UPxGeCaweSL-chyphenhyphenzVF9rT5ZYDooKnAwgswsofHlQO0FDSuE-EVkb2NztWF2LLU3GKZKd4maxEXNAT-gJ1axarDDt1UF5VmChpyS_hrNissGJLj298_9sMV0YGpc/s1600/DSCF4521.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjYIIVIt85N0s-4ZV4UPxGeCaweSL-chyphenhyphenzVF9rT5ZYDooKnAwgswsofHlQO0FDSuE-EVkb2NztWF2LLU3GKZKd4maxEXNAT-gJ1axarDDt1UF5VmChpyS_hrNissGJLj298_9sMV0YGpc/s1600/DSCF4521.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also finished up a piece I had been working on for some time in order to have it at Solstice too. This is a shot after I finished painting it but before it was varnished. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizmfygyB4cR4IJ0Sr5iY_MBXZ09udUbDl6D3J5oa6h_b3yEJMF5MGH0uA32E7NsvpfbWz2xDjzuoHExh2NdirHRvXY7_yigzibp7QHg5A8SH-muBbGzB8n2RSkL4ft3riV1m0VSxyN0Fc/s1600/DSCF4518.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizmfygyB4cR4IJ0Sr5iY_MBXZ09udUbDl6D3J5oa6h_b3yEJMF5MGH0uA32E7NsvpfbWz2xDjzuoHExh2NdirHRvXY7_yigzibp7QHg5A8SH-muBbGzB8n2RSkL4ft3riV1m0VSxyN0Fc/s1600/DSCF4518.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8cOqeDvO2a4TCq6SVoqGDD6hun20q0qf-mktz_Z8vCOetmYhp9Xro44lYMQSXk_-HU0GJet4iJR7ty-Wd_XZID0lacj11aoW_myZy7g0chwrjUqXNgd_K-ZNhPqxFca2y59osDKQrKzI/s1600/DSCF4506.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The final piece just sings to my soul. There was nothing else to call it but 'Jubilation' of everything I have done recently I really think that I like this to most. What a great feeling at the end of the day. When I make good work it reminds me of why I make art. Not every piece can bee as deeply satisfying. I am continually thankful for all the support of my friends and family. </div>

Since working with North Shore and Solstice I have finally finished up work on the large commission I began work on this pas August. I'm dedicating my next blog entry to chronicling that piece. So there's more to come! Check back next week. Cheers!<br />

This shot shows some magnets I'm working on for the holidays (the small squares) I'm using them for testing different ideas and color combos on a smaller scale. Sometimes the tests are really cool! I'll share them as they progress. </div>

Finally! I finished all the color testing for the big panel piece I'm working on. I also got the wood for it and began the carving process! Yay! I'll have more to show of that next week (I hope!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYoqh6yd38E0jFIiya5nLmG3TpQn0Ke7bzl4jlCz9orsfJ65lNy-m77oNt0Z6fOgi_fi6hgyvcNGNtaP-sl7rfK6hL3AfisI4u7YkWu7r1bwNCkm8r4GU3d9cjwgpggLy18heIDSVOEtQ/s1600/DSCF4289.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYoqh6yd38E0jFIiya5nLmG3TpQn0Ke7bzl4jlCz9orsfJ65lNy-m77oNt0Z6fOgi_fi6hgyvcNGNtaP-sl7rfK6hL3AfisI4u7YkWu7r1bwNCkm8r4GU3d9cjwgpggLy18heIDSVOEtQ/s320/DSCF4289.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here I am painting in some final spots on the rays in the lower portion of the panel before varnishing. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCCLP0yluLMbYCZmTahq98371em0DyP9D0fz8P1dbYJS4uaYT69CwMhMkI1kCI94ZsQYSWxtc_QBmZoKFEFicb2z27OQvP9PdP6IlW4RcXbu8jdWZE-lAF-Ma370BpP3zE91G7TGcc5H4/s1600/DSCF4329.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCCLP0yluLMbYCZmTahq98371em0DyP9D0fz8P1dbYJS4uaYT69CwMhMkI1kCI94ZsQYSWxtc_QBmZoKFEFicb2z27OQvP9PdP6IlW4RcXbu8jdWZE-lAF-Ma370BpP3zE91G7TGcc5H4/s320/DSCF4329.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The lower part of the panel. I really like the colors combo on the far left at the very bottom. Which one do you like the most?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2nPKcdXDMgRd323j56EdLN0BBxuKgZr3x1JjIYFaYfRRb1_XmzgswWPYUurubAFc5blfliTK0JJxAQrfCrpVFCbyDeAA93f82XhPjLxy2doZFeRqXHKekJ7ypnHBEuOgFf0aVwCYM1uk/s1600/DSCF4324.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2nPKcdXDMgRd323j56EdLN0BBxuKgZr3x1JjIYFaYfRRb1_XmzgswWPYUurubAFc5blfliTK0JJxAQrfCrpVFCbyDeAA93f82XhPjLxy2doZFeRqXHKekJ7ypnHBEuOgFf0aVwCYM1uk/s320/DSCF4324.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
While varnish testing I also had enough of one of the colors left over to finish up the vertical pink/green one. It looks even better in person. I wasn't sure about it at first but it quickly becoming one of my favorites. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Today I am thankful for so many things. At the top of my mind is how thankful I am for <a href="http://thesmartestartist.blogspot.com/">The Smartest Artist Blog</a> and what I think of as 'Whats Up Wednesdays.' This past week I've been cracking away at a project- it doesn't look like much yet, (but frequently things don't in the beginning and when they 8do sometimes they don't live up to the hype in my head.) The project is a comission for a local client here in White Salmon, Washington. His home features a lot of olive greens and maroons. I'm currently working on a model of he piece that what finished will measure 24" by 96". <br />
<br />
I've been updating my facbook page (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/NWbySE">www.facebook.com/NWbySE</a>) with photos of this project from the beginning- if you haven't been following along heres a quick recap: <br />

I just finished drawing in the lines for my geometric shapes and have started painting them white before painting the shapes in. This will allow me to fine tune the color pallet I'll be working with on the larger piece. It would be awful to get the full scale work done and fine that the under painting doesn't jive with the varnish. My goal is that by next week I'll have the full scale piece assembled and ready to paint! Which shouldn't be too hard since I'll have some extra hands in the studio, my fantastic mother is coming to visit! I'll be sure to feature her in my post next week. Until then- happy painting! </div>

I've had quite the week outside of art! Somehow amidst moving into a new apartment, taking my dog to the vet, and finally going kayaking again I got some work done in the studio!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhelHjl48YPrCxQTRI12tvykc6PjEAfY3TlUWjXVYtmv7OLQu1leYQR_jleFXr8QjrQ9n2fu7kZcYE4N9ZEEQbBvrD2_vV7mEUGc1q4awMfI9l7ll7vWpCvbOQ97dWvQ-ucjg3gCjAZlEk/s1600/DSCF4235.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhelHjl48YPrCxQTRI12tvykc6PjEAfY3TlUWjXVYtmv7OLQu1leYQR_jleFXr8QjrQ9n2fu7kZcYE4N9ZEEQbBvrD2_vV7mEUGc1q4awMfI9l7ll7vWpCvbOQ97dWvQ-ucjg3gCjAZlEk/s320/DSCF4235.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I know its super faint but there's a bird in there, I promise! I got this one mounted and primed. I also got a bunch of work done on the Mt. Baker model. My biggest accomplishment this week was applying for the Gorge Artists Open Studio Tour! <a href="http://gorgeartists.org./">http://gorgeartists.org./</a> Finding the time to edit my images and get everything together while in the process of moving was quite the feat! I also got my website up with its own domain name, I am now on the interwebs as <a href="http://nwbysefineart.com/">http://nwbysefineart.com</a>! Thanks for stopping by!<br />
Cheers!<br />

Its Wednesday, and in the spirit of my friends over at The Smartest Artist (<a href="http://thesmartestartist.blogspot.com/">http://thesmartestartist.blogspot.com</a>) I'm going to start participating in the Artist Studio Day every week! (Okay, we'll see about EVERY week.)<br />
<br />
This week I've been working on wrapping up some projects and starting some new ones. This morning I finished routing out three pieces and after lunch I'm going to mount and prime them! Yay! Here's a shot of the carnage so far:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrHiE1iItZ8bEFlbiDcQ8kV40fb73GZUuQAEzASBL4WKJLy3DTmtMdl8w5b42T5ysx1H18LOUcK_WOezyNhhZjL2a1jC7uaujg3DpnmaW6a7h5J35N14hKYEiPHFioM4HEA9d9bc5BrN4/s1600/DSCF4188.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrHiE1iItZ8bEFlbiDcQ8kV40fb73GZUuQAEzASBL4WKJLy3DTmtMdl8w5b42T5ysx1H18LOUcK_WOezyNhhZjL2a1jC7uaujg3DpnmaW6a7h5J35N14hKYEiPHFioM4HEA9d9bc5BrN4/s320/DSCF4188.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Earlier in the week I finished up a green mandala type piece:<br />

I on Monday I played around with some oil transfer drawing- just to spice things up a bit! <br />

Summer has been a whirlwind of kayaking, time in the studio, and catching up with friends. Somehow, I've managed to get some work done! Over Fall and Winter I hope to be updating this blog more. I am updating my Facebook page regularly and I am working on my website. Below are links to both. Cheers!<br />

I just got back from a 24 day trip down the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon! While on my trip I did several great paintings and killer drawings. I'll be sharing those soon enough!<br />
<br />
Meantime,in the spirit of adventure here are some paintings from 2011 that I made after a visit to Utah. </div>

Hope you enjoy! </div>

Here it is! The results of my one week challenge to myself. Turns out if I push it I can make one in a week. This one is considerably smaller than most. measuring only 20 x 9.5 inches- which honestly felt a lot like cheating. Here's the final product:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxIqF1hSMHR0gmBUUnsdcuT2zivMZsLZeODkzhhbf1dMy_C0TwzYHy8vnISCIpzNseSqzwZZ8IqG3QR0JvP1ESpfoFdUCDhjzUFCCvySYsEzJorEDHWvg-OrgEolEVRQIOdE9olw2lJGo/s1600/DSCF3612.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxIqF1hSMHR0gmBUUnsdcuT2zivMZsLZeODkzhhbf1dMy_C0TwzYHy8vnISCIpzNseSqzwZZ8IqG3QR0JvP1ESpfoFdUCDhjzUFCCvySYsEzJorEDHWvg-OrgEolEVRQIOdE9olw2lJGo/s320/DSCF3612.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
I learned a lot this week about my process and about color.<br />
<br />
I set out to make a white on white piece. I just couldn't do it. I love color. Mixing color is one of the most satisfying tings I do on a regular basis. Producing a color that is what I'm feeling is such an engaging process- its accurate for me than writing a sentence. Joseph Albers changed how I think about color. I used to leave materials raw and unfinished. Now- I can't say 'no' to slapping paint on things. I struggle now with how to pair colors to make the most impact. I am most challenged by picking out the right color of varnish to enhance the painting underneath. Below is the painting with the layer of varnish applied, but not buffed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH4Z7kXl3mK7jSthyJlz7pSXdrEhDIeskqfxrQEc1_0Rybt3vGN6mqa6G716_gRhP6ylURjZfk35g5cXajlI2gGG7e4wbB9rR-pSAQ7NgF0p11D6944WeW-ix_KJBPa-V8jSdPga9-BFE/s1600/DSCF3610.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH4Z7kXl3mK7jSthyJlz7pSXdrEhDIeskqfxrQEc1_0Rybt3vGN6mqa6G716_gRhP6ylURjZfk35g5cXajlI2gGG7e4wbB9rR-pSAQ7NgF0p11D6944WeW-ix_KJBPa-V8jSdPga9-BFE/s320/DSCF3610.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Below is the piece before the varnish. Notice how lively it feels in comparison to the 'finished' piece at the top of this entry.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDvhQoKjL8i8KvDLk2sBuLXDJeEfzngeBwCuwsbBURIzQKGFQPlpLndDAjFkWYeTqmOEpOPT6i1kynQL6N1gguFXTGCOC5KofCqRSY5mmkmP_YLiLRt8QetwzEP9YtwniKKOPyfjZEztA/s1600/DSCF3584.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDvhQoKjL8i8KvDLk2sBuLXDJeEfzngeBwCuwsbBURIzQKGFQPlpLndDAjFkWYeTqmOEpOPT6i1kynQL6N1gguFXTGCOC5KofCqRSY5mmkmP_YLiLRt8QetwzEP9YtwniKKOPyfjZEztA/s320/DSCF3584.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
All in all- I think I had a pretty successful 'challenge' week. The finished product may not be my favorite, but hey, I'm pretty picky. Thanks for taking the time to check this out! Art + Craft + Design = Process.</div>
<br />
Recently I had a great conversation with a friend about the difference between art, craft, and design- a touchy topic to say the least for anyone that works in those fields. To me- its all one be glob of wibbly wobbly mashed up and overlapping stuff. Really, its all the same. Art, craft, and design are all elements of what makes a piece successful. All the paintings in the Louvre would mean nothing if they weren't painted on well made canvas that hasn't warped over the centuries. Additionally, if the Mona Lisa's face was not a golden rectangle would we still feel the same way about it? I'm inclined to say it is <i>how </i>it was <i>designed</i> that makes it remarkable, not how it was painted.<br />
<br />
I have been struggling whether or not I make art or if I craft well designed pieces. I'm leaning towards design. After six years of art school, I still don't know the difference. In the end it doesn't matter because it is genuinely the process of making my work that drives me to do it. <br />
<br />
For the past week I have been working on a piece that I have shown to
no one. Its nothing special, just a quick design I drew up after an
offhand comment from a friend. However, it gave me focus and an excuse
to make something that doesn't directly fit in with my birds of prey and
Columbia River Gorge theme. This piece (not shown) to me is most definitely not
art. There was very little thought behind it. For me it was a challenge
of process and design. Would it be a successful piece if I applied a
spackling of theme to it- but focused mainly on my formula for design
and construction? I am super anxious about this one. Especially after
what happened to 'Pear Bomb' when I finished it.<br />
<br />

I had such high hopes
for it- not that it was a bad piece- but it changed so much when I
varnished it. Sometimes, I get deeply attached to what I think a piece <i>should</i> look like that I fail to appreciate it for <i>what</i>
it looks like. A week after my initial knee jerk reaction to hate 'Pear
Bomb' has done a complete 180. It is rapidly becoming my favorite, but that's probably because I
like the <i>design </i>of the thing, the texture, color, and contrast.<br />
<br />
In the end I'm not so sure that the finished product matters all that much to me. Its done. The journey is over and hopefully I learned something in the process and have made something that someone will enjoy for years to come. Maybe, one day, a 'Pear Bomb' will end up in your life- and you will grow to love it for what it is.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01790521932799489588noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8845077641722142145.post-76023177691623762872013-02-26T21:41:00.001-08:002013-03-12T16:48:05.898-07:00Part of what I enjoy most about making art is sharing it with other people. I especailly love making works for a specific location in a home. Working with other people for what they want in a piece is not just challenging- its deeply satisfying. When I am lucky enough to make art for peoples homes (or offices) I start by discussing what they're looking for in a piece, then I visit their location and get a feel for the space. I take into account how much natural light the area gets, the shape of the room, and the colors it would be alongside. I then spend some time doing rough sketches for them on the spot and laying the foundation for where we will go from there. Typically, I work very closely with my client and we discuss several different ideas before we nail one down. Once that happens the piece can really begin to take shape. Crafting well designed pieces that flow in a space gives me a sense of accomplishment like nothing else can. I strive to make the art works as comfortable as I can, if I can successfully evoke some kind of abstract nostalgia- I consider it a success.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
In the past month I started work on a piece for a local couple in White Salmon, Washington. I did a very rough sketch of a multiple panel piece (on the lid of a pizza box!) and then went to work. What I ended up with was a five panel lay out of a tree that would go in the entrance of their home. Here you can see me with the sketch. In the background is the layout of the piece on the wall. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4Q_9XB7TfP2xHGb_6J2G46K0Ab-H6BKWQIuwXEnM4nRynS0Nxnr_5dqra5L6dRTv2YHJb2g4pjAgClanrS2jC79Dqr0ZDsJ11W6FRPsRzI_mmxJemsJG7aiQMPozdSlbQepsZn0rLl4I/s1600/46827_10102266816423533_1950018094_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4Q_9XB7TfP2xHGb_6J2G46K0Ab-H6BKWQIuwXEnM4nRynS0Nxnr_5dqra5L6dRTv2YHJb2g4pjAgClanrS2jC79Dqr0ZDsJ11W6FRPsRzI_mmxJemsJG7aiQMPozdSlbQepsZn0rLl4I/s320/46827_10102266816423533_1950018094_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Later I went back to the studio and transferred the layout onto the paneling I'll cut up, carve, and later paint the tree onto. The tree outline is in green and is a very rough gestural drawing. As I work with the image the design develops. Working full scale is always a little bit different.<br />

Soon they will be painted blues and greens, and varnished all up! Super stoked to get them all finished up and installed. I'll be updating as they progress. Cheers!<br />

Back
in December of 2012 I was fortunate enough to move into a studio in
White Salmon Washington. Since then I have been making work aggressively
and have had little time to write for my blog. I am making an effort to
do a weekly update. I'm going to do a quick background on what I've
been up to for the last few months.<br />

I began working on wood with texture mediums about two years ago and mainly dabbled in technique and color application and effects. Currently I'm working on a body of work playing with the idea of predatory flight and freedom through place. My recent work isgreatly inspired by my new(er) home in Husum, Washington.<br />
<br />
Living in the Columbia River Gorge is an endless source of inspiration. I frequently see Red Tail Hawks and Bald Eagles when I'm outside hiking or kayaking, for me these birds of prey evoke a sense of place, of home. Driving to work or to play we are constantly surrounded by beautiful orchards, basalt cliffs, and bending grasses.<br />
<br />
Home is very dear to me as I have worn many hats and called many places 'home.' It is my constant shifting of where I call home that drives me to make art. My dwelling is in my heart, as I have gleaned little bits of everywhere I've lived and formed them into my own place that cannot be mapped. <br />
I am constantly working on ideas and exploring imagery. Below is my studio and the first two (of hopefully many!) pieces based on my life here in the Gorge.<br />
<br />
I hope you enjoy! <br />
